Omegle text chat
Omegle text chat, and what replaced it
Omegle’s text chat closed with the rest of the site in November 2023. This is not Omegle — but it is the same idea: one stranger, typed, with no account.
Is Omegle text chat still available?
No. Omegle shut down on 8 November 2023, and its text chat went with it. The founder replaced the homepage with a letter explaining why, and the service has not come back.
Sites with Omegle in their name today are separate services that adopted it, not the original. Some are perfectly usable. None of them is Omegle, and it is worth knowing that before you trust one because of the name.
What was Omegle text chat?
It was the original Omegle. The site launched in 2009 as text only, and video arrived a year later. You pressed a button, a conversation opened with a random stranger labelled "Stranger", and either of you could disconnect at any time.
Over the years it added optional interest tags, so you could be matched with someone who listed the same topic, and a question-based spy mode. The core never changed: no account, no profile, one stranger, and typing.
What is the closest thing to Omegle text chat now?
Any service that gives you random one-to-one text chat with no account and an instant way out. That is what this site does in text mode: press start, you are matched with one person, and you type.
It is not identical, and it is better to say where it differs than to let you find out:
- The same: random, one-to-one, no account, skip whenever you like
- The same: no camera and no camera permission prompt
- Different: no interest tags — matching here is purely random
- Different: no spy mode and no group or question formats
- Different: a much smaller pool than Omegle had at its peak
Why do people still want text-only chat?
Because text removes the parts of random chat that put people off. Nobody sees your face or your room, it works on a slow connection, and you get a moment to think before you reply.
It is also the mode where conversation carries everything. With nothing to look at, people either talk or skip, which is much of why text chat on Omegle produced the stories people still repeat about it.
Text chat options that still work
Checked on 16 September 2026, from each site’s own description of itself. None of them is Omegle; all of them offer random text chat with strangers.
| Site | What it is | Why pick it | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chatspin | Random video chat with a proper text-only mode | Polished, fast, and a large user base | Its filters sit behind an account or its paid tier |
| Umingle | Browser text and video chat with optional interests | The closest to Omegle’s interest tags, and no sign-up | Interests are optional, so a tag does not guarantee a shared topic |
| Chitchat | One-to-one text or video chat with strangers | No signup for text, filters, and a published moderation transparency report | Video chat needs a free signup, and the site is funded by optional subscriptions |
| Wusoup | A text-only chat community | Strictly moderated, and states it is for thoughtful, clean conversations | Stricter rules than Omegle ever had, and 19+ only |
| MatchWithRandom | Random one-to-one text and video chat in the browser | No account, no app, and no message history after a chat ends | No interest matching, and the newest and smallest of the set |
