Comparison

Y99 alternative: an honest comparison

Y99 is one of the largest old-school chat rooms sites still running, with far more features than we have. It is also open to teens and supported by ads. Those two facts are most of the difference between us.

What Y99 is

Y99 describes itself as a micro social network that recreates early internet chat rooms, in the spirit of IRC and Yahoo Messenger. You can join or create rooms on any topic, watch or take part, and move between them freely. Its random chat article says there are over 120,000 rooms. It is a very large search name: 301,000 US searches a month for "y99", and 823,000 in India.

It began as group chat and added a one-to-one random chat, which pairs you with a stranger under the name Anonymous, and later a random video chat without login. Around the chat sits a lot more: private messages, rooms you can password-protect, registered-user badges earned by posting hashtags, push notifications, a basic Android app, and companion sites for drawing, watching videos together and meetings.

Its rooms include AI chat bots. Its own blog lists bots such as Ninja_Girl_AI and Quiz_AI that greet people who say hi, while its about page says "no bots".

What it costs and what it asks for

Y99 is free, and says there are no hidden fees. To start you enter a username; no registration is needed. Accounts exist and unlock extras such as badges, and Internet Matters notes that some rooms require a verified account.

On age, Y99’s privacy policy says only that it does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Internet Matters, a UK child-safety charity, says the site has no clear age requirement, runs teens-only rooms that anyone can enter by lying about their age, and carries third-party ads — some styled like chat windows. It recommends under-18s avoid Y99.

  • Free, with no hidden fees, per its about page
  • A username to start; accounts optional
  • Some rooms require a verified account
  • No clear minimum age; teens-only rooms exist

Where Y99 is the better choice

  • Rooms. Over 120,000 of them, on every topic, plus rooms you create yourself. If you want a community rather than a single conversation, Y99 has one and we do not.
  • Far more features: private messages, voice, photo sharing, badges, push notifications, an Android app and companion sites.
  • A huge, active user base, so there is always someone around.
  • Its AI bots carry an AI suffix in their names, so you can tell when you are talking to one.

Where MatchWithRandom is

  • Adults only. We are 18+ and say so at the door; Y99 has no clear age requirement and runs teens-only rooms.
  • No advertising anywhere on the site.
  • One-to-one only, with text and video as equal modes rather than add-ons to a room site.
  • No account exists here for anything, including badges or restricted rooms.
  • Message text is not stored once a chat ends.
