Comparison

Thundr alternative: an honest comparison

Thundr is one of the biggest names in random chat right now, and it offers more than we do. It also has a coin shop, which is where the two products part ways.

What Thundr is

Thundr is a random video and text chat service run by Lightningware Inc., a Wyoming company, according to its Terms of Service. It works in the browser and has an Android app, and it describes itself as free one-on-one video or text chat with zero sign-up.

Its scale is the first thing to know. US searches for the brand ran at 1,220,000 a month in September 2026, and a further 5,400 a month searched for a Thundr alternative — more than for most of the sites we compare against.

It is a fuller product than ours. You can add optional interests, and its own FAQ says you can filter matches by country and by gender. Its terms describe AI moderation of conversations and an active partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and the service is for adults only.

What it costs and what it asks for

Thundr is free to start, in its own words, and you can begin chatting without a lengthy registration. The same FAQ adds that some preferences or premium features may require additional account information — and in its web app, opening the country settings without an account sends you to its sign-in page.

It sells coins. They are a one-time purchase rather than a subscription, and are spent on Boosts and other digital features; its FAQ describes optional purchases as giving access to enhanced matching or visibility. Coin packs go as high as $999.99 for 100,000 coins.

  • Free to start, no lengthy registration
  • Some preferences need an account, including country settings
  • Coins sold as one-time purchases, spent on Boosts
  • Text and video, in the browser or the Android app
  • Optional interests, and country and gender filters

Where Thundr is the better choice

  • Filters. Thundr lets you filter by country and gender and add interests. We match at random with nothing to filter on, so if you want any control over who you meet, Thundr is the better tool.
  • A far larger pool. At over a million US brand searches a month, matching is fast at hours when a newer site is quiet.
  • An Android app, for anyone who would rather not use a browser.
  • A stated moderation stack: AI moderation described in its terms, published community rules, and a named partnership with NCMEC.

Where MatchWithRandom is

  • Nothing to buy. There are no coins, no Boosts and no paid tier here, so there is no version of the product where someone paying is shown more often than you.
  • No account at any point, for anything — though that is partly because there are no settings to save.
  • Message text is not stored once a chat ends, and we say plainly what is: a record of each match and a log of connections.

Not to start chatting. Its FAQ says some preferences or premium features may require account information, and its country settings send you to sign in if you do not have an account.

What are Thundr coins and Boosts?

Coins are a one-time purchase, not a subscription. They are spent on Boosts and other digital features. Coin packs range up to $999.99 for 100,000 coins.

Yes. Thundr’s own FAQ says you can filter by country and by gender, and add optional interests. We offer none of those filters.

The closest are other browser-based random chat services with text and video: Umingle, Chatroulette, Chatspin and Emerald Chat. Of those, Umingle is closest on price, with no paid tier found.

Why use MatchWithRandom instead of Thundr?

On features, Thundr offers more. The honest case for us is that there is nothing to buy and no account to create — matching is random and free for everyone equally.

How this was checked: Checked against thundr.com — its homepage description, FAQ, community rules, Terms of Service (updated 14 July 2026) and the coin and boost options in its web app — on 16 September 2026. Search volumes are DataForSEO figures for the US market, same date. These services change their pricing and signup requirements often. If you find something here that is out of date, it is a bug — tell us and we will correct it.
